There are at least 10 things you should consider doing when visiting countries or cities with low level of security. Even in some Western European or North American cities you can run into a problem when visiting certain neighborhoods. Don’t let the stories about safety discourage you or fool you. It is very important to know that you can prevent potential problems by doing these 10 things during your visit to potentially unsafe countries or cities.
1.
In order to avoid loss or theft of passport on your journey, make a scan of it. That way you can also identify yourself. Even if police officers don’t believe you at first, you can always ask them to take you to your hotel to check your story.
2.
When visiting unsafe countries wear a money belt under your pants, dress or so. That way you will avoid potential pickpocketing or violent robbery.
3.
Carrying credit cards with large limits should be avoided in unsafe countries. Instead, you should use debit cards with limited assets in order to avoid robberies in general or even gun robberies, like in some African or Latin American cities.
4.
Before your trip to unsafe cities, always check which taxi service is the best and safest option for you. There’s a rule in “third world countries” regarding transportation in the cities and surrounding areas: only the official taxis are safe. Never, and I mean never, enter a suspicious taxi. This reckless move can land you in a world of trouble. These taxi drivers have a deal with robbers, and their favorite prey are tourists. So, beware of them!!!
5.
If you have travel companions, stick with them and watch each others back. In crowded streets of some big cities, you can always run into pickpockets or some other trouble, like a drug dealers who can use you to get rid of their stuff if there is a police raid or so. It happens often in Southeast Asian cities for instance.
6.
Always take business cards of your hotel with you when visiting some big city where you don’t understand the language. Tourists often can’t remember the name of the hotel or its address. This is a good tip, especially when you are drunk. You only have to ask a bartender to call reliable taxi and you just need to show the business card of your hotel to a taxi driver. Simple, isn’t it?

7.
It is trouble free to book a hotel with safe deposit box where you can leave all your precious belongings and passport.
8.
Leave your jewelry and all other precious things in the safe deposit box when you are visiting big cities. It is better to look modest or even poor on the street than to be robbed or even worse.
9.
When visiting a big city, beware of side streets and small alleys. There you can run into suspicious people and the dark side of almost every modern city.
10.
There are certain countries of the world with high rate of traffic accidents at night. So, you should avoid traveling by bus or car at night. For instance, in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia and Egypt.
